FED: Tuckey says he did not ask PM to step down

Liberal backbencher WILSON TUCKEY says he didn't tell JOHN HOWARD to step down as prime
minister .. in a letter his office faxed by mistake to other backbenchers.

Mr TUCKEY says a staff member attached the letter .. which he says he wrote a month
ago .. to other material he was sending to his colleagues about housing affordability.

An MP who saw the letter reportedly said it told Mr HOWARD it was time he stood down
.. because he continued to lag behind KEVIN RUDD in the opinion polls.

Mr TUCKEY says the mistake's embarrassing .. but there's nothing in the letter that
says Mr HOWARD should stand down.
