Fed: AWB slashes wheat crop by 10 per cent

Australia's wheat exporter has slashed two million tonnes from the expected size ofthis year's crop because of drought.

AWB Ltd -- formerly the Australian Wheat Board -- says new predictions on spring rainfallhave forced it to cut the expected crop.

It says it now expects domestic wheat production to be between 15.5 million and 17.5million tonnes.

Just three weeks ago, AWB predicted the wheat crop would be between 18 million and20 million tonnes.

AWB says the latest weather predictions from the National Climate Centre, which forecasta drier than normal spring with higher than average temperatures, have forced it to re-examineits predictions.

AWB says yields in Queensland, NSW and Victoria will all be below average.

Crops in South Australia are on track for an average season and in Western Australia, coastal and western regions are expecting good seasons, while those in the east are lookingat a poor season.
